This event, took place on Thursday, October 3, 2019 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in Smith Campus Center. The University-wide kick-off launched a new year of Operation Impact. The event covered the basics of the Pilot Funds and other portions of Operation Impact. The event is useful for networking to find other students with similar interests and innovative ideas.
Through innovative educational experiences leveraging immersive virtual reality, we aim to provide healthcare students and professionals with the opportunity to foster better relationships with patients who are often stigmatized within the healthcare system.
Wampanoag Outreach Group has worked with the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah) to provide better access to oral and systemic health care for the tribe and other underserved community members on the island of Martha’s Vineyard, MA. Faculty and students from HSDM and Northeastern University’s Bouve School of Allied Health volunteer one Saturday each month to provide care at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. MVH provides much of the dental supplies, and each session is staffed by at least one faculty dentist and up to four students. Students assist with all dental procedures, including extractions, endo, prophy, cleaning, composite/amalgam restorations, crown preparation, and dentures. Wampanoag Outreach Group also participates in the Harvard University Native American Program Pow wow, the Mashpee Pow wow, and the Aquinnah Pow wow where students provide oral education to pow wow participants.
The A.C.T.I.O.N. Program consists of a student volunteer-run pediatric dental clinic offered one Saturday per month at Windsor Clinic in Cambridge. Under the supervision of an attending dentist, 1st and 2nd year students assist 3rd and 4th year providers at the clinic. Since its inception, the A.C.T.I.O.N. Program has held over 30 clinic sessions, providing dental treatment to hundreds of pediatric patients totaling over 750 appointments. A.C.T.I.O.N. is one of the only clinical volunteer projects available to 1st and 2nd year students at HSDM. It is a great way to meet students from various years and to gain experience with pediatric patients.
The Health Professions Recruitment & Exposure Program (HPREP) at Harvard Medical School is a high school science enrichment program aimed at recruiting high school students from the Boston area, particularly those from underserved and underrepresented backgrounds, into science and medicine.
The Crimson Care Collaborative aims to provide an enriching professional development experience for learners at all levels and across all disciplines, and the Medical Education Committee creates activities that empower volunteers to deliver excellent, compassionate primary care for their patients.
The Child & Youth Advocates (CYA) seeks to build a community of students interested in a wide variety of issues affecting children and youth, including juvenile justice, child welfare, education, and children’s rights. We aim to heighten awareness and encourage discussion of these issues at HLS, facilitate student involvement with children and youth in our community and beyond, and advocate for children’s rights.
The Higher Education Student Association (HESA) is an organization devoted to enriching the lives of students interested in higher education and reflecting on diversity and inclusion in our environment through speakers, professional development, community service, and social events.
DISCOVERY YA is a student-run organization at the Harvard Graduate School of Design whose goals are to expand awareness and interest in design by offering introductory workshops and lessons in design to Boston Area youth. The program strives to foster the development of a broad range of design skills and to put students on track for exploring their creative ideas at the collegiate level. The goal of the program is to cultivate greater diversity in the next generation of designers in order to expand the scope and influence of the profession itself.
Our mission is to bridge the communication gap between scientists and non-scientists. We accomplish this by providing free seminars, lessons, social events, and written material on varying science topics for the general public. We also provide science PhD students the chance to hone their communication skills by hosting these events and by giving feedback on their presentations and articles.
The Harvard Program for International Education aims to expose high school students to contemporary and historical global issues and prepare them to think critically about modern-day politics through tutoring and mentoring.
The Ed Portal offers academic mentoring by Harvard undergraduates for children and youth in the subject areas of math, science, computer science, writing, and the arts. Allston-Brighton residents and students who attend the Gardner Pilot Academy, regardless of where they live, can participate in the Ed Portal’s youth programs. All programs are free and open to students in grades 1-12. Also has a mentorship program between 25 Harvard College undergraduates and Allston-Brighton children and teens from a variety of backgrounds, encouraging their exploration of science, writing, public speaking, math, technology and the arts.
