Harvard Centers for Teaching and Learning

The Active Learning Labs (ALL) are a unit of the Teaching and Learning Group, which also oversees a set of instructional shops and the REEF Makerspace. The Active Learning Labs advance the SEAS mission by extending student learning beyond the classroom. Partnering with faculty, the team brings hands-on engineering and design experiences to life through project-based learning grounded in design thinking. With a no-limits mindset, they empower students to build, create, and collaborate across disciplines and experience levels throughout the Harvard community.

The C. Roland Christensen Center for Teaching and Learning was established in 2004 to promote and support teaching excellence and innovation within Harvard Business School. It also provides leadership and expertise about case method teaching and participant-centered learning for instructors at other institutions in the United States and abroad. 

The Department of Teaching and Learning at Harvard DCE works with Harvard Extension, Harvard Summer School, and DCE’s Professional and Executive Development instructors to empower learners through flexible, innovative, and human-centered education. They support more than 1000 online and hybrid courses per year with open enrollment aimed at non-traditional students: adult part-time learners, high school students, and retirees. Their team embraces emerging technologies and personalized support to meet the evolving needs of students, wherever they are. By staying agile, collaborative, and responsive to change, the team designs learning experiences that are impactful, forward-thinking, and deeply connected to the real world.

The Derek Bok Center for Teaching and Learning is a leading hub for pedagogical innovation aligned with FAS and university priorities. It partners across the university to advance effective teaching and learning in a rapidly changing educational landscape. Working with the full spectrum of the FAS teaching community—from undergraduate Course Assistants to senior faculty—the Center supports reimagining courses, pedagogy, and professional development. Committed to creativity, experimentation, and evidence-based practice, the Bok Center fosters dynamic learning communities that support meaningful connection and transformative learning for all.

The Global Health Education and Learning Incubator at Harvard University inspires and supports innovative learning, teaching, and dialogue about cutting-edge, multidisciplinary global challenges. They foster and evaluate new pedagogical tools and instructional strategies that bridge disciplinary fields, educational spaces, and groups of learners. Through the deliberative design of inclusive learning spaces—to gather, to collaborate, to spark unexpected discussions—the Incubator encourages transformative thinking across disciplines while breaking down conceptual and geographic boundaries. 

The TLL is a team of learning designers, educational developers, learning technologists, and media specialists. From supporting classroom and online learning to creating and assessing learning experiences, the TLL team brings a mindset of innovation, experimentation, and analysis to their work. The team-based approach and range of professional expertise allow the TLL to see projects through ideation and discovery to delivery and iteration. 

Harvard Kennedy School launched SLATE (Strengthening Learning and Teaching Excellence) in the fall of 2007 to reaffirm its commitment to top performance in professional education, ensuring that HKS faculty match their intellectual distinction with a mastery of classroom skills. SLATE offers professional development, consultation services, and a growing toolkit of tested materials to ensure that all participants in the HKS enterprise can make the most of every precious opportunity to learn.

The Office of Learning Experience and Innovation (LXI) is the resource hub for creating excellent, engaged classrooms and academic spaces across Harvard Law School (HLS), where the best of technology meets the rigor of the in-person teaching and learning tradition. LXI supports the Harvard Law School Online initiative, which seeks to bring the expertise of our faculty to new learners through online courses that create unparalleled opportunities for people around the world to learn about law and its impact. The Academy is responsible for professional development of faculty who teach in the MD program. Its role is also to develop and support a community of leaders in education and a culture of excellence in teaching and learning, to foster the careers of educators in medicine and science, to provide programming to improve the skills of teachers, to stimulate and support the creation and implementation of innovative approaches to learning and assessment, and to support educational research and scholarship in medical and graduate education.
